Apple (AAPL.O) is likely to highlight how it is integrating artificial intelligence across its software suite, including a revised Siri voice assistant and a potential partnership with ChatGPT owner OpenAI, during its annual developer conference on Monday.
More is at risk at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) than at past similar events, as the iPhone manufacturer wants to persuade investors that it has not lost the AI fight against Microsoft (MSFT.O), despite having forfeited a few rounds.
Apple will have to show the great majority of its more than 1 billion users, most of whom are not tech buffs, why they would desire the new breed of AI that has swept Silicon Valley, analysts say.
“Apple will put on a show,” said Ryan Reith, an analyst with market research firm IDC. “If they nail the landing, the potential is to get the consumer actually interested in AI because so far it has been mostly about enterprise.”
For years, Apple has used AI behind the scenes to enable features on its gadgets, such as its watches’ capacity to detect accidents and falls. However, it has been hesitant to highlight how this technology improves functioning in its products, as Microsoft has done with its early commitment on OpenAI.
Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s largest corporation by market value in January, and Apple’s stock has underperformed that of other Big Tech companies this year. AI chip giant Nvidia (NVDA.O) momentarily surpassed Apple as the world’s second-most valuable business this week, highlighting for some investors a change in power in the digital sector.
“Apple’s initial reluctance to embrace artificial intelligence was fully consistent with its brand. Dipanjan Chatterjee, a Forrester analyst, stated, “The company has always been famously obsessed with what its offerings did for its customers rather than how they did it.”
“But soon, the AI stillness became deafening. “All of this will change on June 10,” he stated.
Every year, Apple hosts a developer conference in its Cupertino, California, headquarters to promote improvements to its own apps and operating systems, as well as new tools that developers will be able to utilize in their applications.
