Below are highlights of the interview:
Can you share with us your journey to becoming a loan officer at USA Mortgage? What experiences and skills have contributed to your success in the real estate industry?
In July 2016, I transitioned into the role of a loan officer, departing from my initial career as an associate behavior analyst in special education classrooms here in St. Louis, MO. Coming from a field as data intensive as behavior analysis, I naturally carried my passion for data into the mortgage industry. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to have exceptional mentors and coaches who have guided me in leveraging data to grow my business & enhance client experiences.
What motivated you to pursue a career in Mortgage Industry?
I was motivated to find a career that offered unlimited potential for growth both personally and professionally. I love that each day brings new challenges and experiences, everything from guiding first time homebuyers to their dream of homeownership or collaborating with investors to determine their return on investment.
How do you approach building and maintaining relationships with clients?
In our client interactions, my team and I prioritize gaining a thorough understanding of their entire financial situation, educating the borrower from start to finish, and using consistent communication.
What strategies do you use to stay informed about changes and developments in the mortgage industry?
We subscribe to all of the housing market news outlets, daily market updates, social media accounts, etc. I rely heavily on the resources provided by my coach and my company.
Can you describe a particular challenge you faced and how you navigated it to achieve a successful outcome?
This field is full of different challenges, and I have had my fair share of those as well. In my early years, I had a hard time overcoming objections, and I ran into them often. I felt like my wheels were spinning and I was running out of opportunities in my area. I leaned heavily into coaching and mentorship during that time and learned it wasn’t that I was lacking opportunities, I was lacking mental toughness. Without realizing it, I was allowing the objections and losses to alter my focus. I was starting to question my abilities, my skillset, and my own determination. Once I consistently changed my focus, my production both increased and stayed much more consistent. One of the most important things in this industry is consistency, and I truly believe that begins with your mindset and focus, not the rates or the volatility of the market.
How do you ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines in your role?
I rely on my company to help keep us compliant and up to date on all changes. They do a great job of doing the heavy lifting so we can focus on our clients.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in mortgage lending or real estate?
If someone is considering joining the industry, my advice would be to: develop resilience, embrace grit, thicken your skin, commit to constant learning and improving, network relentlessly, seek mentorship, and stay committed to ethics and your clients’ best interests.
