“Leadership it’s never about the role, but always about the goal. Leaders aren’t born, they are made. They are made just like anything else, through hard work. That’s the price we’ll have to pay to achieve it.” She cites three ideas that were extremely helpful to her on the path to excellent leadership:

  • Lead by Example; “You can’t be everywhere at the same time, training your team or doing the right thing. So, you have to guide others through your behavior and your mentality, instead of your words. Lead by your actions, the way you think, your work ethics, mindset, and the enthusiasm and passion that reflect the love of what you do. Be the change and the example you want to see in your organization and do the things you expect others to do.”
  • Don’t Be Afraid to Make Bad Decisions; “Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions. Uncomfortable and difficult situations shape you and take your life to the next level.”
  • Be The Hardest Worker in The Room; “Go for the extra mile and don’t stop when you are tired, stop when you are done. Always remember that great things come from hard work. No excuses, no shortcuts and no easy ways. You get what you work for, not what you wish for.”

The Chair of Managing Partner

As a managing partner, a major role is solving problems. Leadership also solves problems. As Colin Powel says, “The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you stop leading them. Mara is hands-on regarding planning, because she believes that without planning even the greater strategy is failing. Mistaking planning for strategy is a common trap. That’s why an hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing. She and the management team review and work on the plan 2-3 times per day which boosts productivity, reduces lowers and produces better outcomes.
